The Fairlington 5K was a neighborhood run and walk held in the Fairlington area of Arlington, Virginia, in the mid-2010s. This site is an informational archive based on the event’s former website. It is not the event organizer, and no registration is offered here.
The idea behind the event
The race was designed to be non-competitive and family friendly. It was hosted jointly by the neighborhood elementary school and the Fairlington Citizens Association, which the archive says was founded in 1977 and represents more than three thousand households across North and South Fairlington. Its stated mission was to promote fitness while bringing neighbors together for a good cause: raising money and awareness for a local family affected by a rare genetic condition and for school programs.
The second annual edition
The archived front page describes the race held on April 11, 2015. Participants could choose a five-kilometer course through the neighborhood or a one-mile fun run. A first-ever spring festival, run by the school’s parent-teacher association, followed with games, prizes and activities. T-shirts and prizes were donated by local businesses and organizations.
The event was organized by the school’s physical education teacher and a representative of the citizens association. A later edition, scheduled for April 2016, added side events such as a silent auction and a charity yoga session.
